School Outreach Services

Awareness Matters

NEW: GSA / LGBTQ CLUB FACILITATION

GSAs (Gay Straight Alliances) and LGBTQ2+ Clubs are important services for High Schools to help create inclusive school environments for youth who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Two-Spirit or any other sexualities or gender identities.

Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, we are proud to offer a partnership with individual schools to help in facilitating these groups.

There are many benefits to partnering with the Centre:

Student Comfort

Many students may be hesitant to express themselves freely in the presence of school staff.

By partnering with the Centre, students are able to connect with a facilitator who is also part of the LGBTQ2+ Community and is seen as being separate from the school, who they may feel more comfortable confiding in.

Staff Labour

While running a GSA or other LGBTQ2+ club may be a labour of love for school staff, it can also become a challenge to maintain as the year progresses and the workload increases, or as the club expands.

Having a Centre affiliated facilitator frees up time for the staff responsible.

Increased Opportunities for Community Events.

Students involved in participating clubs may receive advanced notice for events, activities, and workshops being hosted by the Centre, including our annual Queer Prom.

Information Booths

F.L.A.S.H. weeks, community fairs, pride weeks, and other special interest events are staples at many high schools across the West Island.

These different events share an overlapping with the LGBTQ2+ community, and as such, the Centre is happy to offer information booths at events all across the West Island.

These events help to connect both students and staff with essential resources in the region, while also informing the community of our in-house services.

Assemblies

Some events call for a specific kind of presentation to a large group of students all at once.

Maybe for International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia your school is looking for a presenter, or you need a keynote speaker to introduce a special event such as the Day of Silence.

The West Island LGBTQ2+ Centre offers assembly style presentations to suit those causes.

Class Presentations
& Workshops

Our classroom services are highly customizable presentations that can be tailored to specific classes or themes being explored.

We pride ourselves on being able to offer a personal and engaging experience for students.

Previously our presentations on Intro to LGBTQ2+ Themes, Allyship 101, and LGBTQ2+ History have all been popular options.

Workshops for Teachers & Administrators

Part of our aspirations in the work we do is to help build inclusive and welcoming environments for all LGBTQ2+ people, and sometimes the best way to effect change is through a top-down approach.

As such we are happy to work with administrations and teachers to help foster a deeper understanding of sexuality and gender, and compassion for people who are part of the community.

Are there any associated fees? No

While the Centre does not require payment for the services we provide, we greatly appreciate any honorariums or donations made to the Centre for the work we do.

We humbly and gratefully acknowledge that we are gathered on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehà:Ka (Mohawk) people. This land has historically served as a meeting place for many Indigenous nations, including the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe, and is currently home to Indigenous communities from across Turtle Island and the world.
